So hip

Had Punk's well-baby this morning. It started out great - she is big! Nearly 16lbs (77th percentile), 26 inches long (88th percentile - so doesn't get that from me), normal head size. He asked if she laughs (yes), reaches (yes), said she looked good.

Then he did the hip exam and now we have to take her for a hip ultrasound. He thinks she has Developmental Hip Displasia.

Are you effing kidding me? Can I have a doctor visit with NOTHING wrong with my kid, please? And the idea of my kid in some whacked out brace or half-body cast for 3+ months is umm, not exactly how I want to spend the time when she's supposed to be, you know, learning to crawl.

I wonder two things:
1. Why this wasn't noticed at previous well-baby checks
2. If this was caused by the quack chiropractor who hung her upside-down by her thighs to "adjust" her

At my equivalent Well Baby exam, the docs mentioned quite casually that they were pretty sure I must have water on the brain and would be developmentally challenged. "Have a nice vacation, Mrs. Green."

...yeah. No.

Docs: forget sometimes that they have the power to FREAK US OUT.

oh man i'm sorry jude! if it's any consolation, a friend of mine went through the same thing with her daughter and after they did the ultrasound it turned out that she didn't have displasia. i think they just decided to watch it for awhile and that was...man, years ago. i can ask her for more info if you like.

You are very overdue for a break. I'll pray that it is minor or a non-issue.

Many hugs for all three of you.

I know it's not *quite* the same thing, but *EVERYONE* told us our dogs - first Monty, the Great Dane, and then Oakley, the Saint Bernard had hip dysplasia.

Hips grow differently! None of my fur babies have hip dysplasia, and even if they did, I wouldn't love them any less. Monty even eventually learned how to walk in a straight line, once her legs stopped growing at different rates.

I'm really hoping the ultrasound says no dysplasia. The reason no one mentioned it before is that it probably wasn't apparent then, and what they're seeing now probably isn't hip dysplasia. Doctors are crazy, and I don't think hanging the wee babe upside down caused anything.

I had some hip thingy when I was a tiny baby. I was in a brace for a while. I learned to walk a bit later than normal (18mos). In the long run it didn't affect me in the slightest. I don't even remember it. My mom says it was a nuisance but not a disaster. I will keep my fingers crossed for it to be nothing though.

When I was little (probably one, give or take), I was in a cast for a while to get my feet to turn outward. For a while, as a corrective measure, they even put my shoes on the wrong feet to help guide them into turning outward.

I turned out (hee!) fine, even for the number of times I'm told that I banged the cast against railings as I got pushed down the sidewalk in the stroller.

I was in special shoes to keep me from walking on my insteps. I have external tibial rotation, so my lower legs are rotated out from where most people's are. I walk on the soles of my feet like most people now, but my feet still turn way out.

Jude, if it's any consolation, I didn't walk until I was around 18 months old. I walk fine now. My gait's a little funny-looking (I prefer "distinctive"), but it doesn't hurt or stop me from doing anything, and nobody knows what caused it.

Of course, I'm so unaware that I didn't know I walked funny until I was in my 20's, so.

I also had leg issues as a toddler. I had metal braces for my legs, but I just had to wear them at night. Maybe your kid will be lucky and turn out JUST LIKE ME.

*hugs*

i have hereditary hip displacement. i was in a cast from when pretty much i was born until i turned one, then i was in a brace until i was 2 and a half. and had to have major hip surgey when i was 13. it never mattered for a second. the surgery was fun and my parents ruled about it.

im sure everything is fine, but if it isnt... it still will be. i just always felt special. : ) when i was almost 3, my mom took me to buy walking shoes and i told her, in the store, that i dont wanna walk, she said, "if youre old enough to say that, youre old enough to walk" and i learned. and it was fine.

I want to second all that -- two of my cousins were born with severe hip dysplasia and were in lower-body casts their first 12 months too. One of them later developed scoliosis and spent her teens in a back brace. When she came out of it, she had a 17-inch waist and perfectly half-spherical boobies. We boggled (and were secretly jealous).

what signs did the doc see that would make him think she has hip dysplasia? I'm just curious.

on the bright side, her head is normal!! :D

My Sweetpea had that, but it was diagnoised when she was a newborn. I had to take her home in a brace. I cried when I saw it, and then after three months, I took her to the last doctor's visit and everthing was fine. Sheesh.

Jude, I can't help but think that we have the same problems wiht our babies. Sweetpea NEVER napped long, and she screamed and screamed all the time, too. But I never thought to get it checked it out. The doctors were telling me there was nothing wrong with her no matter what I tell them, that she cries all the time and acts very colickliy. (spelling errors are due to too much thanksgiving dinner, pardon.) SweetPea really didn't stop screaming until after one year old, when it suddenly went away. Too this day I'm not even sure what was wrong. However, she still has stomach issues, and all. I dunno. She has some serious bowel issues, too. However, i know your punk will be just fine. Mine turned out good, from occassion of severe stomach pains where we don't know where it is coming from.

Jude - I know quite a bit about hip dysplasia b/c Rose actually has quite a severe form that has required many surgeries and eventually a hip replacement (which is unusual, btw, it's usually very mild and easily corrected by a soft brace that they were for a short time). Something like this could not be caused by a chiropractor or anything else. The fact that this was not noticed at prior well-baby visits makes it really likely that she doesn't have it, or if she does, it's mild. If it was serious (requiring the fun body-cast thing that Rose endured many, many times) it would have probably been VERY obvious from birth.

Hugs, and keep us updated.

My kids....

1. Why this wasn't noticed at previous well-baby checks

I used to hate the "well MY kid(s)" stories from other people....but here goes. When Emily was diagnosed with Craniosynistosis after hearing the ped. say they were "keeping an eye on it" for a few months, I said to myself, "YA COULDN'T HAVE TOLD US SOONER?????" WTH? When DJ was born it wasn't even like "Oh he's beatiful!", it was literally "How's his head look?"
Good luck, and I hope everthing turns out ok.

My brother spent six months as an infant with a brace between his legs. Mum swears it made changing him much easier.

The chiropractor didn't cause it butdon't ever take your baby to a chiropractor again, I'm begging you. I promise you they're not trained to do it,I don't care what they say. I don't hate the chiropractors, but not for your baby.

The hip thing, well wait for the U/S and see what it says. Keep in mind too, that you seem to have doctors that overreact to everything. I mean, the head thing where you wound up getting shipped off because of a CT still boggles my mind. The very idea that some dumb person did the CT in the first place boggles my mind.

I don't think it's your kid. I think it's yourdoctors. :)

Either way, one day at a time, mama. One day at a time.

Yeah, after the chiro did this weird thing to my baby, I never took her back again. Bleh. I've never been to a chiro for me, so I can't say how they are with adults.

U/s is tomorrow. I am nervous as heck. :(

As for the CT, well, that was done at the crappy local hospital and I will NEVER go back there again. I had a bad experience there when I was pregnant/bleeding, too.
