This one's for you, Cali. <3 xo <3

(Cali, who had her IVF BFP, had an initial beta of 36, a second beta of 155, and a third beta of 160. Sometimes the world is just so, so, SO unfair. I hate that she is hurting so much and was so close.)

Uh, what do those numbers mean? In my world, if I make it from 35 to 160, I'm doing pretty good....

Okay, it's like this:

When you're pregnant, your body makes a hormone called human Chorionic Gonadotropin, or hCG. You can sort of follow whether or not a pregnancy is progressing (in the early stages at least) by taking blood and monitoring the amount of beta hCG. Typically, in the early weeks of pregnancy, hCG doubles itself every 48-72 hours.

So she started with 36 at 13 days past ovulation, which is a little low but not at all unlikely. Three days later it was up to 155, which is a stellar doubling rate. Three days after THAT, it had only risen 5 more points (or had come up and gone down), so the likelihood that it is a viable pregnancy is pretty much nil save some wacky miracle.

How's that?

Got it. Sorry it doesn't look good at this point. :(

She has some frozen embryos but no money for a FET. :( And yeah, there's always that slim chance but even the RE said it was pretty much nil (I think) and she ended up stopping her progesterone and stuff that day. :(

I know things look bleak, but my numbers did not double either (I only had two betas done) and my pregnancy was normal, so it's possible she had multiples and only one survived, as someone has suggested. Best wishes to her regardless.

I really hope something wonky happened and she is still pregnant. I really do!

There is still a chance. I'll cross my fingers for that.

So unfair.

I know there's not any such thing as "deserving" a big, sticky, fetus with very happy beta numbers, but if there was - Cali would be deserving.

I am so sorry to hear that. :( Does she have frozen embryos or the ability to try again?

She does have some frozen embryos but right now has no money to do a FET or travel back to the Northeast to the clinic she used. :(

Let me know if you set up another fund for her.

Jude, I don't get the plaid - and I am seeing it all over in blog-land...?

Calliope (http://steinbockfrau.wordpress.com/) is a big fan of plaid. So we all decided to put some plaid up to let her know how much we dig her and how sorry we are about her pregnancy loss.

:(
