I am so irritated! I went to get the gift certificate that my cousin gave me for Christmas, so I could use it since I have to (ack!) go to A MALL (ugh) today to find something to wear to Carina's wedding. It's for Kay Jewelers and it's for $100. I never buy jewelry, but I thought, heck, with $100 I could get a little something. Well, I'm reading the back of it for the "rules" (did I mention it expires June 15th? What the heck?), and one of the requirements is that the purchase must be at least twice the value of the gift certificate.

So even if I want to buy some stupid piece of jewelry, it has to at /least/ cost $200, so I'll still be out $100. How infuriating. I sure don't want to spend $100 on jewelry. Crap on a cracker! But I don't want to just throw it out, since my cousin bought it and it was a gift and all of that. What kind of store makes a stupid rule like that? Grrrrr.

Oh, and it's raining, so I might not be able to bike ride with Brandie. Meh. But we're definitely going to do /something/ fun.

Good idea... but I don't think I'll do it. It would seem weird.

Are you sure they bought it? My cousin worked in a Zales and sometimes they gave things like that away as a gift with purchase. No idea if Kay's does the same but you could probably ask at the store if it was a purchased GC or a promo.

Ugh, that sucks. I think I have to back out too. I just woke up about 20 minutes ago. I've been trying since about 11:30 and just haven't had the energy. It's fucked up. I'm sitting here in a daze. :(

Hey!

Sorry I got this after you left work. It looks like he didn't even buy the thing, so if you want to save $100, I'll give it to you at a 50% discount. Or heck, you can even HAVE it!

What a lame-ass gift

If the gift requires you to spend money, I don't think it's a gift at all. I wonder if she even read the fine print.

If you're gonna give someone a gift certificate, you give him or her something that will buy stuff the person will want, and not cost any extra. I think the best one I've gotten was to Half-Price Books.

Wow, I would love a gift certificate to Half-Price Books. Whenever I go there, I spend so much money. I can't allow myself to go there often.

Half-Price Books sounds fabulous! One of my aunts gives me a Tattered Cover (great independent bookseller in Denver) gift certificate every year and it's the greatest thing -- it gives me an excuse to spend _hours_ in there. Last time I went I took my then-two-year-old daughter with me and we just stared together, then bought a couple of carefully selected books. (:

I'm willing to bet that your cousin didn't know about that silly rule when she bought the gift certificate. And the rule itself is dumb. Call the corporate office. Raise an unholy stink. TRUST me, the situation will be resolved to your satisfaction. In the current climate, with people not having money to buy anything, no store that sells /luxury/ items is going to risk alienating a customer that might come back and buy stuff once the economy is better. Just pretend like you buy jewelry all the time.

My mom works for Reed's Jewelers (she's pretty high up in the heirarchy) and I promise this would work with them.

The more I think about it, the more I think Juliann is right and that Anthony didn't really BUY the gift certificate... just transfered it to me. Well, I feel better, then, since I'm not going to use it. I'm not going to pitch a fit with a company if I don't know all the facts.

Besides, I don't wear jewelry. :)
