I survived my first day of work, and all I can say is that it's likely to be very boring before it gets exciting. Apparently I'm not even allowed to have cases until I complete all of this FCCS-required core training, and that usually takes about three months. And right now, I don't even know when the core classes are, so I'm just trying to absorb all kinds of information that I won't even get to put into practice until next forever. I suppose I'll have to ask about that soon, although I'm following a coworker to court in the morning (ugh - my second day and I need to dress up AND go in early!). I need to find out about getting LISW supervision, too, because the Team Lead I was assigned to isn't even licensed. Whee.

The biggest perks of the job (so far as I can tell) are the casual dress code, the staff support for each other, and the fact that you get an hour of paid lunch (hours are 9-5 with an hour lunch, but you get paid for 40 hours). The downers include the aggravation of working under Children's Services, being hated by the clients, not being home when my Jennifer comes home for lunch, and (right now) the sitting around doing a lot of nothing. But hey, I'm getting paid, right?

After work, Jen and I went to say goodbye to 356dreamerSteve because he's leaving for Basic Training tomorrow. He gave us the rundown of where all of his cat stuff is, because we'll be watching his house for him. We ate chinese food and watched slept through Y Tu Mama Tambien and I can't believe he'll be gone tomorrow. Adios, Esteban!

There is too much activity on my friends list, and I'm going to have to make a chop chop. I was bowled over when I got home today - major suckage - and I haven't gotten to check email or anything because I spent too much time reading posts. I just wish I didn't like you all so much. Aah well - I'm a crappy friend anyway. :) Really, I'll be doing you a favor.

I would expound more ridiculous wisdom on you, but it has come to my attention that the cutest girl in the universe is currently reading in my bed, and I'd be a fool not to crawl in beside her. Thank you to everyone who wished me a good first day - you're all very sweet and I appreciated it lots. Mwah!

Three whole months?! Jeebus. Even at my /first/ job out of grad school at the CMHC, I was out on cases (albeit with someone "teaming" with me) in like the first two weeks.
Here, at the current job, we throw people on out within the first 2-3 weeks with another therapist for three weeks "teaming for training".
I would be soooooooooooooooo bored, too.
Could you post the particulars of the job again? (I seem to have forgotten them! Woops! :)

LOVE! :)

Well, as I understand it, you can start taking small amounts of cases as you start taking the CORE courses. Like, after you take the first two COREs, you can have two cases in your name. Frustrating, I know, but I'm hoping it will just make me a better clinician. (Actually, I don't think I can even call myself a clinician at this job.)

Yeah, I've heard of this kind of training before, but I guess it's required by Children's Services... my organization is a contract organization for FCCS. It's standard child welfare stuff - you know, making sure kids are safe, removing kids from homes if you have to, reunifying families, court ordered stuff - that sort of thing. I'm still trying to decide if I didn't royally fuck up my career by taking this job. My thought (currently) is that I can be a supervisor fairly quickly (the way people don't seem to be very licensed) and that would be a career-booster.

Your thoughts?

I thought it sounded suspiciously like what I do. My agency is contracted through DCYF to provide the intensive home-based services it's clients need. (We also work with Juvenile Justice and an Employment program.)

We just do the therapy... we don't decide if the kids stay or get yanked (although we may supply the 'evidence', so to speak for such to happen). All our services are Court ordered and we prepare reports and appear for reviews.

Personally, I don't think you fucked anything up. Even though it's difficult work, Child Welfare will give you a wide breadth of experience (therapy, families, State, Court, compliance, mandated services, substance abuse, dual diagnoses, violence... etc) that you can easily transfer to any setting.

Supervision would be the next logical step - and is a nice highlight to /any/ resume. You might even be eligible quicker for such a position there since, the reality is, most people don't last very long.

Feel free to pick my brain any time. :)

Yeah, I wanted to work in child welfare, but I didn't want to be one of those people who heard comments like, "I bet you get commission every time you take a kid, that's why you take everyone's kids," or other crap like that. I won't be doing therapy, just case management and referrals, and I worry if I'm selling myself short.

Bleh. :)

Well... how 'bout this?
It's a job. No matter what, you'll get /something/ out of it. If it doesn't work for you, you'll find another one that will. :)
A lot of places say 'Case Management', but really mean 'clinical case management'... a nice way to say you do everything - therapy, referrals, cm, etc. Perhaps you can explore with them if there is potential for you to expand your responsibilities? (Groups, etc?)
Give it a couple of months and then see where it leads you.

Well, most of the other TCs (my job) don't have master's degrees, and one of them doesn't have a license (and neither does my supervisor). While I'm sure there will be /some/ clinical stuff (because, well, you'll be dealing with the people), they refer out for everything.

But you're right, maybe I can weasel my way into a group or something after I've settled in. You're so smart.

And it's a paycheck!

Hey! I'm all about expanding my job to fit MY needs.
Use the fact that you have a Master's to your advantage! Pimp yourself out to expand services or to provide additional 'supports' to your neediest families. As I mentioned, Groups are a great way to do this... and agencies LOVE the idea of providing more services. :)
It's a paycheck! Yay! :)

I've been doing a lot of thinking about what you've said, and you're absolutely right. There are definite ways I can work this job to my advantage - and theirs.

You are so smart.

I know I was supposed to really like Y Tu Mama Tambien. While I didn't HATE it, it certainly didn't r0x0rz my s0x0rz the way Ebert and Roeper seemed to imply it should have

Steve-o is a military man now. That's weird. In a good way, I suppose.

I want to have coffee with you! I miss Columbus like crazy this week.

One of our major clients is the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, and with that comes child protective services and child and family support services. I spend a couple hours every week helping track down dead beat dads and making sure their checks get to the right people.

I miss you.

Today I rode my bike down 5th to drop off my rent, and when I passed Forsythe, I swear I saw a white Ford Escort driving toward me.

...or maybe it was just wishful thinking.

*hugs* Chin up, Lara. Things are going to calm down for you.

I fell asleep. I don't know if it was Chinese Food Coma, or if I just didn't like the movie. There was an awful lot of sex in it, and I don't really like that. It makes me kind of uncomfortable.
