I've started considering law school.

It is expensive and it is really difficult. Only do it if you are 400 percent sure you want to be a lawyer. Else it is a huuuuuuuge drain of resources and intentionally hell on your brain. I had aced every college class I had ever been in (undergrad and grad) and law school was at least ten times harder than anything I had ever encountered. If you are proud of your straight A average, don't go to law school. I don't know of a *single* person who got straight A's in law school and I know thousands of law students (ok most of them are lawyers now but I still know a dozen students) including the best of the best at both top and lower ranked schools.

There is a LOT of intentional humiliation, much like boot camp. Only boot camp lasts ten weeks, the law school wringer lasts a year minimum.

I'm not attached to any sort of GPA. Lots and lots of people complete law school every year - I don't see why I couldn't be one of them.

i think you should go. it depends on what you want to do with your life really, but if you like school at all you probably won't mind law school. it is a bit intentionally humiliating, but i have a feeling you don't listen to that kind of shit. also, it's not nearly as stressful if you're not going to be a big-shot lawyer. other people are ripping their hair out over who's going to be in the top 1% of the class and get the internship, and i just don't care because i'm doing to work in the bioethics field. which might be somewhat similar to you wanting to practice social work stuff.

I think it would be valuable from an advocacy point of view to have a law degree. I love social work, but I /really/ want to do macro-level (communities and beyond) stuff, and I'm not sure a social work degree really gets me inside any political lobby-type organization.

(Unless I could get some fantastic connections.)

I think you should go to law school. In contrast to the above opinions, law school is EASY. The first year is hard, you have to learn a whole new alien way of thinking. But once you have that down, it's cake. Again contra above comments, almost every law student I've ever known had a straight-A average, or thereabouts.

And from a practical sense, it's the single most marketable grad degree you can get.

It's good to hear some talk from the other side. I got a little tired of the "you'll never make it" camp, and I appreciate the support.

Right now it's just a thought. A lot depends on Jen and how her career goes, because I can't really think about going to school without finding out what's going on for her. Besides, we'll never know where we're living. :)

I had to take some legal classes as part of my Masters, just relating to the degree itself.... stuff about copyright, patents, and other technology-related legal issues. I know enough to know what the issues are, discuss them, and know when I need a real lawyer. I also know it's confusing enough that I'd probably be miserable going to school to actually BE a lawyer (I considered it briefly for a few months a couple years ago before starting my Masters).

Have you thought about looking around for some law classes you can take that just cover legal issues that would help you in your field? Do you have to take continuing ed classes to keep up your license? (I know some states require stuff like that.)

Date: 2003-10-13 02:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com
Well, the thing is, I'm going to get all of the legal training I need for my current field (child welfare) through the county. I've just been thinking about what I want to do, and how I thought I should go about doing it. Law school may not be the right path to take, but it's one I've been considering as I think about my life and how I want to live it.

And yeah, we're required to have 30 hours of continuing ed credit every 2 years to keep our licenses. Wa hoo. I have 19 right now.

Having no experience with law school, I cannot give you my perspective on how difficult or easy it would be. That's all entirely subjective anyway. I all but slept through high school and graduated top of my class. College was a huge wake up call for me because I wasn't at all prepared and had no study ethic whatsoever. Laura, on the other hand, struggled through high school (getting very good grades, but working much harder than I know I did) but found college to be a breeze. It's all subjective.

So go for it, if it's what you really want. In the end, Jude should do what Jude wants to do, regardless of what other people think.

I also have poor study skills. Unfortunately, neither college nor grad school fixed that for me.

I have no idea why I keep wanting to go to school. I mean, I hate homework. HATE.

Jude...dude...if you're going to do law school, then you've GOT TO COME TO BOSTON.

In fact, I know a great place not too far from Boston...cheap...2 cats...safe...and occasional entertainment from the 2 people who currently live there...

It's called my house.

And bring Jen. She sounds tasty.

I considered law school for a while too.

I finally concluded that there are some.

you go to law school
come out other side and find
reason to sue me

From: [identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com
How could I sue you?
I would steal your bike, then
you'd not come see me.
