I got this message from my big elementary school crush:

Holy shit birds!!!!
first off, how could you think i would'nt remember you, your jude [last name]!!!! its good to hear from you, i remeber the card i made you, and that birthday party, and hanging out with you and steven berard at his grandmothers house that was the parking lot of the parksquare credit union , that is now the pawtucket credit union. danm, i havent seen you in a long time. i dont check this email often, but i do check it. write me at [email], and we'll catch up. hows your brother? how are you, where are you? rock. hope to hear from you soon.

HA HA HA HA, it's all because I sent this message:

Okay, this is going to sound very weird. But I don't care, because I /am/ very weird and you'll just have to suck it up. We went to OLQM together. Not /only/ did we go to OLQM together, but you were my first grade school crush. Holy crap on a cracker, but I thought you were the shit. You were my secret santa one year, and you got me a stuffed pink mouse, and holy shit if I didn't keep that thing for years. And you came to one of my birthday parties. You made me a huge card. I still have it. It's at my dad's house. And I followed you and Doug and J at confirmation class. It appears that you are still one of the coolest people in the universe. You don't even have to remember me. I'm just glad as fuck that you're still around.

Wow. Jude

I [heart] Friendster!!

He did! He did! He took a big piece of red poster board and folded it in half and made a card out of it. He drew all kinds of pictures on it and cut out things from magazines, and wrote the words to a Weird Al song.

Yeah, I was obsessed, what can I say. Too bad he didn't tell me that he'd be the unicorn wearing the pink leotard. :)

When I was younger, I always said I was going to marry a gay man.

(Funny, now I'm going to marry a gay woman. WHO KNEW??!?)

I was worried about Friendster when it first came out. It seemed like a big spam-trap, you know?

Maybe I'll join up.

You should! :) I'm smurfchick at livejournal dot com. (Duh.)

They're thinking about making it paid soon, though.

Yeah, probably. Although I get the feeling the cost situation would be similar to LJ.

I don't understand how Friendster works. I went over there the other day after you talked about it, and I figured, 'Wow, I can just do a 'search' for all of my old skool friends' ... but I can't! Or at least, I can't figure out how.

How, exactly, did you find said first-ever crush?

Date: 2003-11-08 05:30 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com
Well, it works like this - you have to identify a number of people as your friends. And then, in some Six Degrees of Separation thing, it builds you a "Personal Network" of your friends, your friends' friends, your friends' friends' friends... you get it. And then you have free reign of searching through your Personal Network.

So you can "user search" names all day long, but unless they're somehow in your "Personal Network," you won't have access to the person's profile to see if you're correct (photos, home town, etc.).

So to find said crush, I went to User Search and typed in his first and last name. His profile came up (with at least one more, actually), and since he was friends with my friend Christine's friend Liam, I got to see his profile, and recognized him. Then I sent him a message to confirm it. :)

Totally unrelated

You have come highly recommended from Peas (I posted a poll looking for fresh reads) and therefore I am adding you to my friends list!

I admit that you have also come very highly recommended*. I don't have much friends-only stuff, but enjoy it, goaty!

*Actually, what I think she's always said is, "I can't believe you don't know her already."
