How To Get Married In Massachusetts

I don't even really have the words. For once. No, really.

Is this real? Pinch me.

How do I become a Massachusetts resident?

There is no hard and fast rule about how one becomes a Massachusetts resident. The Massachusetts Citizen Information Service states, "There is no formal procedure for establishing a legal residence in Massachusetts. Voter registration, automobile registration, a driver’s license, the appearance of a person’s name on a city or town street list, and rent, utility, mortgage or telephone bills normally provide tangible proof of residence. However, individual public or private agencies or institutions may have their own requirements for proof of residence."

The bottom line is that for purposes of the marriage licensing statutes, the parties must reside here and intend to continue residing here indefinitely.

Be cautiously happy - Mitt is still going to try to get the SJC to delay the granting of licenses until the amendment goes to the polls in 2006, to avoid "confusion". He is working furiously to make that happen before the May 17th start date for issuing licenses, so it's not altogether a sure thing yet.

On the bright side, though, it seems like there's very little legislative support for his attempt to appoint a special AG to argue for a delay in front of the SJC, and the current legit AG wants no part of it, so it's an uphill battle for the governor.

I usually err on the side of cautiousness and try not to get my hopes up. And you know, even if Mitt ends up somehow convincing all of Massachusetts to his douchebag ways, I'm so freaking excited just to see something like this in actual print somewhere.

:)

Mitt's an asshat. He's a paranoid homophobic bigot.

Do I get to help with wedding plans? :)

Get it right. When you're deriding him, either call him Mittens or use his real first name.

Congrats!

I do, however, disagree with many of your commenters concerning Mitt being an "asshat" and a "bigot". While I do not agree with his position concerning gay marriage, I don't think that his stance is based on hate. Instead, I believe his stance, however differnt from my own it may be, is based on his own moral and spiritual values. Labeling someone an "asshat" or "bigot" because they hold an opposing view violates the very principles upon which our nation was founded. I would hope that people who speak so often of "tolerance" would be tolerant of opposing viewpoints.

Just my two cents. I hope I don't get flamed.

This is not a flame.

bigot n. a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices. —Merriam-Webster online

Governor Romney has threatened to block same-sex marriages by refusing to issue the appropriate paperwork to the cities and towns, arguably putting himself in contempt of the state's Supreme Judicial Court, if his appeal to suspend licenses fails. I'd call that "intolerantly devoted".

As for being an asshat, well, he's an asshat on many issues, not just this one. That's a perfectly good epithet for someone whose wrongheadedness, in the opinion of the epithet-thrower, actually causes harm to the state he's supposed to be running. He's free to claim I'm an asshat, too. Sticks and stones, &c.

No, I can honestly say I *KNOW* he's not really a bigot. He's just a stubborn pain in the ass that doesn't know when to give up.

It's gone through the courts, and rather than wait the couple years that the constitution (that is older than the US constitution) requires for the people to vote on the measure...which is what "the other side" was calling for all along.... he now says he wants to stop the marriages from happening between now and then because they'll cause "confusion" or somesuch. Even the attorney general doesn't support him on this, so he's trying to go around him.

I'm tolerant of his view, but his actions now are starting to feel like a witch hunt. THAT is what pisses me off.

I don't care if his personal stance is for or against same-sex marriages. He can have whatever moral or spiritual beliefs, as far as I'm concerned. But Massachusetts has a legal process, and this has gone through the legal process, and he's trying to go around it. That bugs me. He is in a position of significant power in the state, and I believe that someone in a position of power should follow the rules rather than let personal morals dictate the direction of an entire body of people.

I don't like the way he's doing this AT ALL. :) But I like you!!

Mitt will try and try. He's got cronies with radio ads reminding folks about the sanctity (I butchered the spelling there) of marriage, and how the SJC should be removed -- no joke. Us current residents will be BOMBARDED in the next 30 days with reasons why we shouldn't legalize what they're going to legalize...

...the only upshot is every single legal analyst -- from rookies to people like Dershowitz (another spelling butchering) -- says Mitt doesn't have any chance to change what it going to happen.

I assure you when you're here next week, you'll hear the radio ads. WBZ is flooded with them. It's one of those things that sucks and is good to hear...

...it means he's desperate.

eff mitt. but here's the plan. we (well not you and me, but you and your lady and maybe me and mine) get married and reap the financial and psychological benefits therein. when the idiots of taunton and new bedford vote down our marriages, we cite some constitutional mumbo jumbo and say you can't bestow a right on someone and then take it back. no takebacks! and if they try, we tip over some cars and set them on fire. i know how to do it, i went to uconn. see ya soon!
