I don't even really have the words. For once. No, really.
Is this real? Pinch me.

How do I become a Massachusetts resident?
There is no hard and fast rule about how one becomes a Massachusetts resident. The Massachusetts Citizen Information Service states, "There is no formal procedure for establishing a legal residence in Massachusetts. Voter registration, automobile registration, a driver’s license, the appearance of a person’s name on a city or town street list, and rent, utility, mortgage or telephone bills normally provide tangible proof of residence. However, individual public or private agencies or institutions may have their own requirements for proof of residence."
The bottom line is that for purposes of the marriage licensing statutes, the parties must reside here and intend to continue residing here indefinitely.

Date: 2004-04-23 04:38 pm (UTC)I do, however, disagree with many of your commenters concerning Mitt being an "asshat" and a "bigot". While I do not agree with his position concerning gay marriage, I don't think that his stance is based on hate. Instead, I believe his stance, however differnt from my own it may be, is based on his own moral and spiritual values. Labeling someone an "asshat" or "bigot" because they hold an opposing view violates the very principles upon which our nation was founded. I would hope that people who speak so often of "tolerance" would be tolerant of opposing viewpoints.
Just my two cents. I hope I don't get flamed.

bigot n. a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices. —Merriam-Webster online
Governor Romney has threatened to block same-sex marriages by refusing to issue the appropriate paperwork to the cities and towns, arguably putting himself in contempt of the state's Supreme Judicial Court, if his appeal to suspend licenses fails. I'd call that "intolerantly devoted".
As for being an asshat, well, he's an asshat on many issues, not just this one. That's a perfectly good epithet for someone whose wrongheadedness, in the opinion of the epithet-thrower, actually causes harm to the state he's supposed to be running. He's free to claim I'm an asshat, too. Sticks and stones, &c.

Date: 2004-04-23 05:03 pm (UTC)It's gone through the courts, and rather than wait the couple years that the constitution (that is older than the US constitution) requires for the people to vote on the measure...which is what "the other side" was calling for all along.... he now says he wants to stop the marriages from happening between now and then because they'll cause "confusion" or somesuch. Even the attorney general doesn't support him on this, so he's trying to go around him.
I'm tolerant of his view, but his actions now are starting to feel like a witch hunt. THAT is what pisses me off.

Date: 2004-04-24 12:31 pm (UTC)...the only upshot is every single legal analyst -- from rookies to people like Dershowitz (another spelling butchering) -- says Mitt doesn't have any chance to change what it going to happen.
I assure you when you're here next week, you'll hear the radio ads. WBZ is flooded with them. It's one of those things that sucks and is good to hear...
...it means he's desperate.

I can't get married 'til I have a J-O-B. Otherwise, what kind of a catch would I be? After that, the plan is ON!
