I SOLVED THE MYSTERY.

I went down to the door of the house and rang his doorbell. He came out to the porch and I asked him if he had a minute for me to ask him a question. He invited me up; I introduced myself.

I asked if he'd found any of my mail, and he said no. We talked a little bit about the guy that just moved out, and he said that maybe he'd taken my mail (there is drama). I said that I was specifically looking for internet rental movies, and that I'd gotten two yesterday but only one made it up. He asked if it was in a red pouch. YES! I said. He said that there were two movies - one for me and one for him. I said, "I'm pretty sure they were both for me." He said he thought he'd thrown it out, and went to his kitchen trash.

AND THERE WAS MY MOVIE, UNDER THE LAUNDRY DETERGENT!

He didn't have his glasses on, he says. He thought it was addressed to him, he says. But the movie has been retrieved. Case closed.

YAY! do you believe him?

i would totally choose to do what my mom and I call "benign interpretation" and believe him. because it's just easier to live in that sort of world.

good sleuthing though!

I'm inclined to believe him only because I have no reason not to. I mean, I never spoke to this man before today.

One thing I learned, GAY MEN ARE FULL OF DRAMA, even when they are in their 40s and 50s. Craziness. I live in such a hormonal house.

Well, I didn't get ALL the missing movies back. Just the replacement movie that came on Monday. :)

Why would he throw it out?!

maybe because it was for his roommate?

I would think he should hang onto it for awhile, if that be the case. Just because they're not roommates anymore doesn't mean he should throw out the other one's mail.

But still - he knows it's a movie, why not open it and see what it is, or return it to netflix? He could sell it for that matter. It does nobody good in the garbage.

Dude, he's OLD. He didn't think it was for his roommate, he thought it was for him. (We have the same initials, and both of our first names have 4 letters...)

I don't think he had any clue what Netflix was. He just opened it, saw it was something he wasn't interested in, decided it was junk mail, and chucked it. Or so he says.

I'm the suspicious sort, but I'd seriously start looking into a PO Box. When things start disappearing like that, I get very nervous. Plus, I know that all kinds of mischief can be caused by getting other people's mail. Stuff that takes years to fix.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

About PO Boxes....

Wait, so he is a netflix member too? but he is pretty sure he threw it out? And was it in a red pouch? I'm sorry but 2+2 in his story seems to equal 3

yeah. that's sort of where I am. that just doesn't make lots of sense.

And why did he ignore you repeatedly knocking on his door?

He says he didn't hear me knocking.

I'm guessing (nice interpretation here) that he thought it was junk mail - they look kinda junky, and it's not unusual for all apartments in a house to get the same piece of junk mail on a given day. Making it easier for him to think that one was for him, since it's less likely one address would get two of the same.

But they seem a little "Heavy" to be junk mail. Though I guess maybe all those AOL CDs has everyone totally convinced.

YES! I said. He said that there were two movies - one for me and one for him. I said, "I'm pretty sure they were both for me." He said he thought he'd thrown it out, and went to his kitchen trash.

This whole statement is where it falls apart for me. Because if He said there were TWO movies, one for him and one for you, it means he KNOWS what they are. Which then doesn't support his "Thrown it out" argument. Well, I thought one was for me, so I promptly trashed it.

Well, that's my paraphrasing. When I explained to him that I wasn't really just inquiring about any old mail, and was in fact referring to a specific piece of mail (a movie) that was mailed in a red paper envelope, that's when he said, "There were two. You got one and I got one."

He never really gave me the impression that he had any clue what Netflix was. His den area was full of (*gasp!*) VHS tapes.

That's great, although I don't quite understand why he took a movie (even if he thought it was for someone else) and threw it out. And what about the other two?

Oh well, at least you don't have evil neighbours.

I'm hoping it was a misunderstanding. I have NO clue about the other three movies, and I'm going to try to just forget it. He was SUPER apologetic about it, though, and overly so... so that makes me think that he might have 'accidentally' thrown out other movies and now realizes they were mine. Or something.

Who knows?

Yipes!

I've got Netflix, too, and what happened to you with your movies is exactly why I'm so paranoid that someone's going to snatch them! :/ I'm glad you have a better idea as to what might have happened to the other movies. You might look into getting a P.O. Box though since your mail isn't delivered directly to your apartment. ( :

Yeah, I'm definitely thinking about the PO Box, I'm just kind of against it. I don't feel like I should HAVE to have a PO Box when I have a perfectly good mail slot. I just want everyone in my apartment to do the right thing... and have the mail carrier not suck.

Yipes!
