What's in a name?
Nov. 9th, 2004 05:11 pmDoes anyone want to pay for me to switch my LJ name from smurfchick to judecorp? I'm so tired of smurfchick. It was never supposed to be something that stuck anyway.
When I was interning at Stonewall Columbus, I was doing a lot of research on Out in Columbus and didn't want to make a profile that would easily be identified as me. I was trying to think of some sort of generic pseudonym and came up with "smurfchick." Then when I was signing up for LiveJournal I tried several names, all of which were already taken. (And this was over three years ago! I can't imagine how bad it is now.) So I defaulted to smurfchick.
I dunno. I just don't feel like it suits me or represents me. What do you guys think?

Date: 2004-11-09 10:44 pm (UTC)Would you stop being smurfy if you changed your name, or would you retain your inherent smurfiness?

Date: 2004-11-09 10:44 pm (UTC)If it were me, I wouldn't do it. Oddly enough though, if it weren't for 9 years of people knowing me that way, I'd drop Arwen as my TIM name in a mouse-heartbeat.
It's like the difference between a tattoo you pick at 15 and one you pick at 30.

Shoot, I think I'd almost rather be D'Arcy for consistancy, except that I don't like people calling me D'Arcy in public. Or smurfchick for that matter. At least if people wanted to call me judecorp they'd be close to my name. ;)

Date: 2004-11-09 10:48 pm (UTC)I've been associated with smurfs for /so/ /long/. I have smurf stuff up the wazoo. I don't even have it displayed anymore. Maybe that's why I've been feeling disconnected.

Date: 2004-11-09 11:11 pm (UTC)oddly, despite that, I don't think you should bother to change your name - I really don't think it's all that important. Do you really feel that it has any actual impact on your life?

Date: 2004-11-09 11:12 pm (UTC)One Christmas I got so much cow paraphernalia that I wanted to positively DIE. What put me over the edge were the cow underpants. Dear gods.
Now if I never see a cow item again, I would be just fine.

Date: 2004-11-09 11:14 pm (UTC)No, it's not a huge deal or I would have ponied up the money and done it myself. But, you know, if someone wants to just do it for me... ;)

Date: 2004-11-10 12:03 am (UTC)Oh,
smurfchick.
You realize you have just secured your Decemberween presents with everyone on LJ, right? :)
I have a lot of links to
smurfchick in comments and stuff (like, for instance, the 6 in this comment) that can't be edited to reflect a new name, and all the people who come by my journal later and wonder what makes me tick won't be able to find your awesomeness. Does LJ fix those automagically if you pay for the name change instead of just ditching the account?
And if you were
judecorp, when you eventually come to Philly, could we still have Smurf 'n' Turf?
I don't really have a strong feeling about the name
smurfchick (or, for that matter,
judecorp). You're always Jude to me (I had to try very hard a couple weeks ago to remember "D'Arcy"). Go with your heart. And if you change it, I'll try (at least a little) not to make
smurfbrother feel silly for his unchanged name.
Of course, this is from a guy that waited a year and a half too late to get his most common online name here, and had to go with the backup. Never shoulda let
jadefu talk me out of Darl_Bundren.

Date: 2004-11-10 02:14 am (UTC)Not to downplay anyone who gave me smurf stuff, or any stuff that was given, but there's something about this totally hot guy poring through back entries in my LJ for clues about where I lived, locating my apartment, and showing up at my front door with a box of smurf toys. All in answer of an LJ post stating: First person to show up at my front door gets a big kiss.
What a memory!

However, regardless of my name, we can always have smurf and turf. I promise. Also, I am glad that you couldn't remember "D'Arcy." Gosh, that seems like a million lifetimes ago. But it was a pretty good name. :)
