Benefits orientation
Dec. 26th, 2006 02:08 pmWell, this morning was a cosmic waste of time. I had to go to a benefits orientation at the university. And it was blah blah blah form blah blah insurance blah blah blah... all words. But the funniest part was that I am a benefitted employee, but temporary... so I will only have this job for 6 months. Well, some of the benefits take 6 months to kick in! For example, I'm eligible for free dental insurance... on July 1. But my last day at this job is June 30! Ha ha ha ha ha.
I ended up not signing up for anything or even considering it. I could get health insurance in March but then I'd have to switch back to Jen's again in July and that is just so confusing and sound like a recipe for disaster. We'll just do what we've set up and revisit it if I end up in some sort of permanent, full-time position for next fiscal year. I ended up taking the life insurance since it's like $1/month and hey, you never know.
I got my little temporary parking permit for my first month of work. Once I get a paycheck and a school ID and all that other crap, I have to go buy a real one. Good times. I'd forgotten how working at or attending a university is such a hassle to start. Further reason why I need to just be there forever, I guess.

In less than one week, it will be 2007 - the year we become parents!

Date: 2006-12-27 03:30 am (UTC)And yes! on the life insurance. You're not a mommy yet, but you will be and it's one of the greatest things you can do for your family. Jen included. If something happens to you, God forbid, that extra insurance is muy importante. It feels like wasted money if you live for 70 more years, but it's still important. Since getting knocked up, I've been adding and adding to the insurance like mad.
You know the one that's already paid for itself twice? The accident insurance. AFLAC is my friend. Every time we have a mishap and have to go to the doctor for it (like when I sprained my wrist at the daycare and when I dropped Ella on the stairs--not my proudest mommy moment and the source or so much crying for the both of us, it's not funny), I filled out my claims and voila! A $60 check for each incident.
I have a patient whose daughter plays softball on the highschool team and is in my office all the time. They've damn near made money on their accident policy. I've signed at least 4 claims for them the last 8 months alone.
Just one more thing to keep in mind.

Date: 2006-12-27 12:57 pm (UTC)But I'd really like to have a mortgage payment and the gas turned on and pellets for my stove, so right now we're concentrating on that while I work part time for less money. The idea that I'll be bringing in half of what I brought in last year is staggering, even for 6 months.
