It makes me so sad when people are giving away their pets on Freecycle.

I know! And I see it A LOT. It's not like a one or two time thing.

Yup. I'm on Freecycle here too and I see plenty. Also lots of people who didn't get their cats fixed, and giving away the kittens.

Well - it's sad but not as sad as just...letting them out the car door. I mean....at leat they're making an effort?

I suppose that's true. I just don't understand how people can take pets on and then let them go, as if it's a temporary thing.

There could be a "good" reason - like their dog is taking to biting their new baby. Or they're moving somewhere that doesn't allow pets and they've tried every possible avenue.....

Though I agree. Which is why my lizard is pushing 6, and we're dealing with a 2 year old snake who doesn't seem to want to eat right now. Blah.

I know things happen, esp. things like dogs biting or whatever, but Freecycle just seems so impersonal to me. I am so attached to my pets that I can't imagine giving any of them to a stranger, even if I desperately had to get rid of one.

But I don't have a ton of respect for people who take on pets and then look to get rid of them when they move. I have lived in several states and at least 6 apartments with my cats and it was never an option to look for a pet-free place.

I agree with you, though yeah, better than dumping or a shelter that may kill them. :-(

I couldn't imagine parting with our babies. It's hard to understand.

But why would someone take on the commitment of pet ownership if they wanted it to be temporary? I know things happen like you have kids and they have allergies, or the pet gets aggressive or something, but usually these ads are not like that. Sigh. It bums me out.

Right, and I wish they'd at least specify in their post that they plan to do some screening and a home visit and all that. I get that sometimes reasons come up that you just can't have the pet anymore, but just to basically abandon it to a stranger...ugh.

Also pisses me off when they're on freecycle because I strongly believe in asking for a good-faith offering if looking for a new home for a pet. If someone can't manage to save up $50 or so (shelter adoption is, what, $100 now?), how are they going to manage if the pet needs an emergency vet visit? Plus you know that no one's going to pay $50 for a pet to use for a lab specimen. You can always then waive the fee if an elder or someone comes to meet your pet and you're pretty damn sure it's legit.

i se it on our freecycle alot..also on our craiglist, even worse than freecycle..my babies are mine for life..it's supposed to be a commited thing..it makes me sad and angers me..i could never do that to any of mine..worse,i work for the shelter, you should see the reasons for surrender:
"moving"(excuse!we moved from ga to here with ours)
"no time"(should make time or should've thought of that before adopting)
"animal got too big"(oh wait, they don't stay puppy size forever?!,or they did'nt bother to research the breed)

i could go on & on!!!

Oh, when people ditch their pets because they are moving I get SO angry. I have moved no less than six times with my cats and it never occurred to me not to take them with me and find a home that would allow all of us. Argh!

I do have to agree with Jude.. You have the option to look for an apartment with or without pets. If you currently have them.. You took the commitment to keep it for better or for worse.. To give it away is one thing.. but to give it away on free cycle.. Come on.. That is just way to impersonal.. Now.. if you do and you specially note in there.. Why they cant keep it.. and ask for visitation.. or specially note they need to see how they deal with the animal before giving it away.. *to check if they are good ppl*..

Then that might be a tad bit different.. But you know they are not going to do that..

We are in the same situation here sort of. Me and Joy want to get out of this apartment for several reasons. But where are we going to get another apartment with 3cats and 1 dog and 1 rat... No apartment will allow that many animals arround here. If we would have known our landlords were such idiots and so careless as they are we prolly would not have gotten Kory.. Thank GOD we did though.. We love her to death and would and could never give her up. I have jokinly stated we just had to give away our cats so we can keep Kory. But I could never do it. I would miss them al..

Some ppl just dont think before they get a pet

You know, I know that sometimes things happen. I know that some animals are great with adults and then you have a kid and the animal bites your kid or whatever... or maybe you are getting divorced and have to sell your house and can only afford a tiny apartment and you feel bad for your big dog that used to have a yard. There are exceptions, but I think way too many people take on pets and aren't serious about them or think of them as temporary.

It just makes me sad. :(
