So now that I have ditched the requirement of sleeping on my side, I am getting much better sleep and no butt pain. Back-sleeping, how I love thee. Of course I am still waking up like clockwork somewhere around 4am and being awake for an hour or so until I drop off again, but since I'm not waking up in pain it doesn't seem as bad. It's kind of a throwback to the first trimester.

Anyway, it's a good time for thinking. Like this morning, I was thinking that we are going to Florida to see the in-laws soon, and I don't have warm-weather clothes! Oops, major oversight on my part. Heh. I mean, I have LOTS of warm-weather clothes, I just can't wear them anymore. Heh. So I suppose I should at least get one pair of lightweight pants and/or some shorts or something in case it's especially hot. I can wear jeans if it's not terribly hot but I will be in Florida, dang it, and I want to wear something summery!

I thought about wearing a bunch of dresses but I really don't need to give Jen's mom the wrong idea. Heh. We'll see what happens. Really I just keep thinking about a couple of days of soaking in the pool and trying NOT to think about a couple of days of Jen's mom being really critical of Jen. Usually it just bothers me but lately it's been REALLY bothering me. Like all things kid, it sends me into major overdrive. The idea that Abuela will trashtalk my kid's mommy in front of her just reduces me to a big old pile of weeps. Sucktacular.

In funnier news, I have had a rental car all week because my car's bumper is being fixed from the rear-ending a while back. I'm used to driving crappy cars and always get excited about rental cars because they have OPTIONS. I'd never had a car with options before. Well now I have this totally jacked-up 2007 car with 4K miles on it, and I handed it over and got this crap-ass Mitsubishi with 27K miles on it. It was such a bizarre role reversal, and I MISS MY CAR!

At least I get to pick my car up this morning. YAY!!

Florida sounds like a dream place to me right now -- I've never been there, but warm sun, sand and ... well heat sound lovely. Why would you give Jen's Mom the wrong idea by wearing dresses? Old Navy has some fun dresses that could really double as maternity dresses right now...

A little explanation:

Jen and I are not "dress-wearing" folks. Every so often lately I will pull out a dress for some sort of function (like a wedding or something) but it is a rare occurance. Jen, however, probably hasn't worn a dress since her mom used to dress her as a small child. Know what I mean?

So it's a HUGE point of contention (and one of the reasons going to see Jen's folks makes me hella anxious) between Jen and her mom. Jen is 32 years old and her mom STILL goes on and on and on about how Jen would be happier and/or more successful in life if she dressed/looked more girly, if she wore makeup, if she didn't look so butch, etc. Sometimes Jen's mom will try to use me or other people to "illustrate" her point - aka "Jude grew out her hair, why don't you grow out your hair?" or something. And it REALLY bothers me, because it's a TOTAL lack of respect on Jen's mom's part.

So if I go there wearing a million dresses, it will only fuel the discussion. And hearing Jen's mom cut her down all the time really hurts my feelings - doubly so if she tries to use me to do it.

Does that make sense?

Ahh, well non dress wearing folks makes sense right there! Come on, I don't think that many women these days wear dresses more often than they where pants anyway. But your point makes complete sense. Tim's Mom is very, very big on appearance and gives constant hell for little things like hair that might be a smidge too long for a boy, or more than one peircing on a girl (heaven forbide one of her son's does it)...and does the same exact thing where she picks one person to be a "role model" for why everyone else should be the same.

How long are you going to be visiting for?

Ugh, that's an awful situation. You're smart to do what you can to minimize the antagonism.

When her mom isn't looking though, I bet some of those Old Navy cotton dresses will be really comfortable when the summer weather hits and you're as big as a house. I always feel really bad for super pregant women in the summer. And you can always girl it down by slapping on a pair of Chuck Taylors. :)

Ha ha ha, I bet they would be comfy too. I actually have a couple of dresses that will probably still work even with a big old belly esp the ones from my fatter days.

Check out Target and Old Navy for cute/inexpensive maternity wear.

Yeah, those are the only places I have really bought anything... I just don't have a lot of cash to spend on clothes I'll wear for a couple of months. Argh!

It will be interesting to see if I feel a difference! I am a little self-conscious about wearing a bathing suit in front of the in-laws but I will work it out if there is nice weather involved!

Nothing is more uncomfortable than feeling stuck between your mother in law and your spouse. I hope you can float serenely in the pool anytime Jen's mother gets pinchy.

Also, I just realized I work with someone who knows you and when I mentioned your name she said to say hello-- does the name Beth Oliver ring any bells? She says howdy.

Oh my god, Beth Oliver!!!! What the eff is she doing in NEW JERSEY? (We went to OSU social work school together.)

Now that I'm crazy married with a baby on the way, feel free to tell her that I had the maddest crush on her all through grad school. Oh, it was awful. Awful awful.

That's funny - how did I come up at work? I feel honored! :)

Your name came up because suddenly I saw Beth and thought-- she got her social work degree from a big school in Ohio and then I thought...hmmm...I know someone else like that. And then I remembered it was you, so I asked her.

Oh, and I did tell her you had a crush on her and she said, "I was a lot skinnier and sexier in grad school, you know." I could hear the grin in her voice. Anyway, she's very pleased for you. She and her partner are going to get hitched and they are also working on getting knocked up. Oh, and Beth's in NJ because for now she's living with her mom to save money.

Aha! Thanks for the smile. I met a couple of good people at the OSU Social Work program... but a lot of them were REALLY scary!

xoxoxo Congrats to them!
