For the last several months, I have been a Freecycling fool, snapping up almost any baby-related items that I thought we might have some use for. I mean, we've amassed quite a collection.

The fun thing about Freecycle is that you end up with a lot of stuff that you DON'T want. You go to pick up some, say, safety supplies and you end up with a stuffed animal. Or you pick up a "bag of baby items" and there is invariably a pair of pants in there that is, umm, not your taste.

Now I get to re-Freecycle it! I just passed off a bag of miscellaneous baby items and a crib bumper that I ended up with that we've decided not to use (we want a breathable one instead if we use one), and I've got a few more things up that are looking for homes (including our on-again, off-again humidifier). It's fun to put the stuff out on the stoop and know that someone is going to use it. (I know I've used most of the stuff that *I* picked up on stoops!)

Freecycle appeals to me on so many levels: it's free, it's fun, and it involves getting rid of clutter! Yay!

I *just* came in from bringing two rubbermaid storage drawers out to my front porch for someone to (hopefully) pick up! I put them next to the box of old (cool) records out there that I'm also giving away.

SO FUN!

Whoo hoo! I love when stuff you don't want is valuable to other people. I also love when people are throwing out stuff that you need! I have seriously amassed quite a collection of baby stuff.

Okay, I've been wanting to ask someone about this... do you worry at all about "attracting" strange folk to your home, and having your home and email address linked that way?

I have used Freecycle a few times, and offered once (but wasn't taken up on it), but I sort of drifted away when I realized it made me feel sort of nervous...

You know, I don't even think about it. My last name isn't attached to my e-mail ever but it is on my mailbox. I guess I tend to think that hippies do freecycle and hippies are safer than weirdos. :)

I never remember the e-mail addresses of the people whose houses I go to for making pickups, and I doubt most people remember mine, either.

I just don't even worry about it.

Oh, that is awesome too. We switched out a lot of the stuff that came with the house (blinds and stuff) and I'm really glad other people can use it. I hate throwing perfectly good stuff away!

I always loved putting stuff on the street in my old neighborhood and within five minutes, it was gone!

I also love freecycle, though I've only used it successfully once. I got some David Sedaris books and a couple of other really interesting looking books. I rarely freecycle, since I have such a hard time getting rid of stuff!

I have a buttload of baby stuff that I'd like to give you. I didn't feel comfortable having random Craigslist strangers coming by the house. Lemme know if you want any of it via email.

Oh yeah, I am all about the free and cheap! It's true. I can't help it. Everything looks better when it's free!

I bet you can get some serious free stuff in the city. I'm jealous!

You may already do this but if not make sure whenever you get something you check to make sure it is not a recall item. Here is website that is helpful - http://www.cpsc.gov/
there is a "kids" section.

I am very happy everything is going well for you.

Thanks for the link! I hadn't thought to check anything for recall (because I've gotten a lot of bland stuff like an infant tub and a manual breast pump, etc.) but I will totally look into that.

Maybe enough people just don't know about it yet?

From: [identity profile] nikisazombie.livejournal.com
Maybe not. I would'nt know how to let them know. Maybe print up some flyers and post them around town or something. Because it's a really good program.
