BBC News described him as "the first Japanese pitcher in the World Series". Surely the Japanese teams that play have pitchers...?

Unfortunately "World Series" is a misnomer because Major League Baseball has mostly teams from the US with a couple of Canadian teams thrown in for good measure. So no, no Japanese teams in the World Series before Matsuzaka.
