We have been hustling around here trying to winterize stuff and also get the baby's room squared away. Slowly but surely it is getting better. At least the summer toys and the gas grill are in the shed for the winter, and the linens are on the futon and the crib. There are other things to do but most of the necessities are done. I have wiped down the PnP/basinette with Lysol wipes so it is good to go. There is a lot of dust in the basement. Still have to bring up and wash the bottles, but we have replacement nipples for some.

We took Punk to the pumpkin patch today and you have to take a tractor/hay ride to the patch. Last year when we did it, the tractor just drove us to this patch across the street, but today it was like a 20 minute ride over the bumpiest mud/dirt paths ever. It was AWFUL. Worst idea ever at 36 weeks pregnant. I am so freaking sore and am having BHs from hell. I couldn't hold on well or brace myself well because I was holding Punk on the seat (she fell off a couple of times from the bumps and was very squirmy) so it was not good. Not good at all. Punk, however, had fun and liked going out into a pumpkin patch and choosing a pumpkin. She also found this little tiny gourd that I think is a miniature delicata squash - one decent sized pumpkin and her little gourd were $5 total. And I didn't have the baby in the field, so I guess it's all good. Poor kid's probably got a scrambled brain though.

The weather is getting cold but I am trying to avoid putting on the heat. We have used the pellet stove three times now, and have done a lot of baking to heat the house with the oven. It has been 60 degrees in the house most mornings. Brrrrrrr. I suppose it will be heat time before we know it.

Today is my birthday and I am 35 today, which means that I will be 35 when I deliver this baby, so now I'm officially in a "geriatric pregnancy." LOL and pass the geritol.

It seems like everyone had chili for dinner tonight. And why not? It is definitely chili weather.

The smell in my brain is crisp air tinged with wood smoke, the sound is crunching leaves under stiff shoes. The fwip feel of corduroy is between my legs and my hands are just dry enough to need dots of lotion. Warm, thick, stick-to-your-ribs meals have replaced cool salads - oatmeal for breakfast, creamy soups for lunch, stews for dinner. The sky is grey and ominous during the day, clear by night with sparkling stars.

Today, Smooch and I lived and breathed true autumn on the southern Maine coastline. I zipped my fleece vest over my sweater and we pulled her too-long knitted sleeve over our clasped hands. "Clever mittens you have," she said as she passed us, a well-bundled speed-walker on Shore Road. "I'm just not ready for it to be this cold," I admitted, and she agreed. Houses puffed smoke from chimneys and nearby, someone had started burning the first of the season's cast-off leaves.

We stood on sharp outcroppings of rock over a surging grey sea, bitter mist blowing off waves made stronger with high wind. Our hair whipped frantically, giving us natural toupees, the cold air causing the first rosey cheeks and earaches of October. Scarecrows and pumpkins were the decor du jour, bags of brightly-wrapped candy flooded shelves, patio tables stacked and abandoned. This is the Off Season.

Today was a day for cold hands wrapped around hot cups of coffee, for bigger loads of laundry due to thicker and heavier clothing, for waterproof duckboots and smartwool socks. It is autumn, and it is our birthday, and it is Halloween time, and it is the end of the days you can get manage without coats. This is the last month I can truly stand, the last hold-out before Daylight Saving Time "fall back" hell, and that first strange whiff of the home heat that has been off since April.

It's time to bake heavy breads, stiff pies, and warm dinner rolls. It's time for cranberries and pumpkins and too many apples, for birthday presents and Halloween costumes, for fireplaces and cord wood and oil trucks.

It's time.

Deciding to put the flannel sheets on the bed last night was one of the best things that Jen and I have done in a while. So cozy, had to go to bed right away. Nice.

It is quite cold in the house but I refuse to put the heat on. I am just not ready for cold weather and heating bills! *stomp stomp* I've heard it might be 70 degrees or so next week, so I'm holding out for that. At least that's what I'm telling myself.

p.s. Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] eeka13!
