A real kid!

So for the last two days, my child has stayed awake staring at us when we are rocking her to sleep, and then does NOT cry when we put her down in the crib and walk away. Instead, she blabs a bit or something and then goes to sleep.

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY BABY??!??!?

~//~

Also, we have been Wii stalking to no avail. And this evening, Jen was headed to Wal*Yuck while I was putting the baby to bed so we can get a little nipple/sippy cup spout basket for our now-installed dishwasher (!!!!!). She just called and said, "Should I get a Wii?" I say, "They have one?" She says, "They have FIVE."

This is the Wal*M that never has ANYTHING.

I should tell her to buy all five. ;)

~//~

It's really cool to walk through my house and see kid stuff. My heart melts every time I walk past the little kid table or see a pile of blocks on the floor or move her little red car. I love babies and I love snuggling them, but it's awesome to have a KID. A kid who says, "Da! Da!" when she is playing with her duckies in the tub, who waves and says, "bye-bye" to everyone at a restaurant and then blows kisses, and who tries to do the hand motions to "The Itsy Bitsy Spider."

I have a kid!
judecorp: (punk banana sticker)
My office was having an all-day training on the assessment tool that we're required to use for EI services. It is not the greatest assessment tool ever and people tend to be trained poorly on it, so it was a good idea. At my agency, I'm pretty much the go-to expert on the tool because there was a TON of training at my last job and because the directors were real sticklers about following the tool exactly (so we learned the "right" way).

I volunteered Punk to be a guinea pig because they needed someone around her age (they also had a 6 week old, a 20 month old, and a 30 month old). Hey, it's always good to see how your kid is doing, right?

I am proud to say that she totally rocked the house. I sat her in the chair with the tray because she is too eager to move around, and I thought she would HATE it. But she didn't, she sat there and played with all of the toys. I was pretty much stunned. She also was consistently doing items in the 16-19 month range in all areas of development except gross motor, of course. Which I knew. Because she doesn't stand or walk or whatever. Eh. (The assessment tool basically caters to the lowest common denominator so a typically-developing child tends to score ahead.)

She really impressed me in the fine motor section, even though I know that's her big strength. She put a peg in the pegboard. She stacked two blocks (which I knew). And she even put the circle shape in the shape board which I was NOT expecting. And she actually scribbled with a crayon instead of just eating it! She really was in rare form today. She hugged a baby doll which was the cutest thing ever, so I think I will have to get her a baby doll. I could have died of cute. And she busted out two words during the assessment - baby and bye-bye. (She said 'duck' (da) for the first time today, too!)

She didn't take a morning nap and was STILL in a good mood. Seriously, I was so impressed. Then she fell asleep in the car on the way to day care (10 minute car nap), stayed up for lunch at day care, and then only took a 50 minute nap at day care from like 12-1pm. She fell asleep like a big log at 6:45 tonight... but has been really whiny and fussy on and off in the night. *sigh* Last night was a terrible night and I don't have high hopes for tonight, either.

She is the awesomest ever but she would be MORE AWESOMER if she would sleep. Srsly.
judecorp: (sad baby)
Punk has woken up from each of her naps today after 45 minutes or less and was crying both times - big, real tears, not the "I want you to come get me NOW" yell. She also woke up in the middle of the night sobbing unconsolably, even though I was sleeping with her. This afternoon when it happened I /knew/ she was still tired so I tried to snuggle up with her on the bed and she was snuggly, but still crying. So I did what I never do and took her to the couch with me and let her watch a little bit of PBS so she would stay calm until she got composure. Her face was all blotchy from crying, poor thing.

She has no fever, and does have some teeth coming in, but has a bit of a runny nose today so I called the pedi's office just to see what they thought. Since she has a recent history of ear infections that we don't find out about until they are huge, they suggested bringing her in.

Gosh I hope it's not another ear infection, because then they'll want to talk tubes.

~//~

Recent Punk cuteness:

1. Pretending to brush her hair.
2. Pretending to talk on the phone, but with her shoe.
3. Showing two body parts: belly and foot.
4. Trying to put on her shoe.
5. Saying 'bye bye' and 'ball' (baba and ba respectively), but not consistently.
6. Pushing a toy car on the floor, sometimes with a vroom-vroom noise.
7. Yelling, "MA MA!!!" when she wants something and I'm in another room.
8. Toys she will go and get if you tell her to: car, ball, shapes, blocks, books, bucket.
9. Saying, "RAAAAR!" whenever she sees any kind of animal. Even fish.

Baby

Jul. 18th, 2008 04:12 pm
judecorp: (baby stripes)
I swear to God my kid just said 'baby.' I was looking at Flickr to fill out one of the silly Friday Surveys from the Due Date Community and she cruised on down the couch and said, "bah beh." And she was looking right at the pictures of herself!

She will probably never do it again, but I'm calling 'baby.'

Also, I have this ancient wooden case filled with cassette tapes. (Because you never know when you might still need The Stop The Violence Movement's "Self Destruction" cassette single, you know? Or maybe the first couple of Indigo Girls albums? Or The Muppet Movie soundtrack?) Punk just now discovered how to open it (it's kind of like a roll-top desk) and pull out the tapes. She just held one up in the air and had a very triumphant look a la Braveheart.

FREEDOM!!!!!! (Now put my guts back in.)

Long recap

Jul. 7th, 2008 09:11 pm
judecorp: (remember it)
So we survived Punk's first year and now her first birthday party, complete with rain because of course I can't have a party that I expect to be outside without a healthy dollop of rain. We invited a lot of people because it was her first birthday and we think she is the coolest ever, and also because of the holiday weekend bringing out of town friends closer, and I really relied on having some outdoor space to put some of these people. Thankfully the rain stopped in the late morning so we could have some folks on the deck, but the yard really didn't get used and I didn't get to have the Baby Pool Party I was dreaming about. (Oh, the photos we could have had!)

Instead we had Babypalooza in our living room and it was the cutest ball of chaos you will ever see. Besides Punk, there was Jack (16 months), Ruby (11 months), Mo (10 months), Charlotte (10 months), Jeremy (6 months) and Anna (12 months). It was crrrrrrazy! But freaking cute. Also, Punk has stopped beating up Mo and has moved on to Jeremy. Mmm, younger men.

My [livejournal.com profile] smurfbrother and SIL ([livejournal.com profile] gretastic) were in town for the festivities and as always, that was made of awesome. I just love when they are around because they are the coolest ever and because they are so in love with my kid. I mean, sure, she's the coolest ever, but they are so into her and it is really great. And she is really into them. After a day or so, I could ask, "Where's Uncle Rick?" and she would look at him and then crawl over to this giant ball she has so he could play with her. And of course she knew that Aunt Gretchen would pick her up whenever she wanted to see her balloons out the window. That kid loves her some balloons.

I wish they lived closer to us so badly. It's like an ache.

Also, my brother totally worked his butt off helping us out with the party. On Thursday while I was at work, he did all of my dishes. And on Friday, he mowed the back yard (even though we didn't get to use it). And then he made pounds and pounds and pounds and POUNDS of cook-out food - shrimp and couscous salad, pasta salad, and the most delicious potato salad ever. Yum.

~//~

Punk is just so awesome. So so so awesome. Tonight she was sitting on the floor putting toys in a container and dumping them out. Over and over. It is so neat to see her little wheels turning. Rick taught her how to work one of the buttons on her pop-up toy (now she can do two!), and now I'm trying to teach her how to push a toy car around and say "vroom vroom." Also, she is trying really hard to stack blocks, but she hasn't figured out how to let it go gently yet - she still pushes really hard.

She is such an amazing and perfect little thing, and I just love her so much.

~//~

Tonight is Jen's first night teaching Digital Media at a local adult education school. She is really excited about it because she likes teaching and because it's actually an art job, but I'm not going to lie, the idea of being a single mom twice a week after working long days is really daunting. That, and I need to find someone who can cover from when she has to leave to when I get home two nights a week, which is stressful. But the worst is that she told me it would be a 10-12 week commitment and I knew that no matter how crazy, I could plug away for 10-12 weeks. But then the other day she dropped the bomb that it is actually THIRTY-SIX weeks. As in 9 months. As in that's just crazy talk. That's 9 months of coming home from long work days, doing Punk dinner, Punk clean up, Punk playing, Punk bedtime, Punk toy clean-up, Punk day care bag change-over, the works. I am tired just thinking about it... and it's only the first day.
judecorp: (baby feet)
On Tuesday at 1:15pm my baby girl will be a full year old. I can't believe an entire year (almost) has gone by since a tiny, little, skinny, chicken-legged bit of a thing emerged into the world in such a dramatic fashion, almost as if she couldn't wait to experience it all. And she's still like that, even today - always has to be in the middle of it, trying to figure it all out.

Tonight she took her first bath in the big bathtub. Crazy, right, since she's almost 1 but I've been bathing her in the sink ever since we ditched the little baby bathtub. It seemed easier because it didn't involve my kneeling (ow) and well, I wanted to keep her a baby as long as possible. And she wasn't the best sitter, and still would prefer to sit on her knees and loses her balance on her bottom sometimes. But she'd gotten too big for the sink and was driving me nuts the way she always wanted to climb out of it, and I gave her a test run in the kiddie pool where she sat still enjoying the water for a while. Operation Big Tub was a complete success, right down to her pulling to stand on the side of the bathtub so I was able to rinse her more easily.

Also in the last couple of days she has started to cover her eyes when you say, "Peek-a-boo." In true Punk fashion, she does this only when she wants to, much like clapping on cue or waving when you say "hi" or "bye." But dear God that peek-a-boo business is the cutest thing ever. I am trying to teach her to blow kisses now, and sometimes it looks like she is trying to figure it out.

I have been trying to feed her with a bowl and spoon and most times she is glad to hold the spoon in one hand and grab the food with the other. Until she pulls the bowl off of the suction cup (why on earth is it removable???!?) and tries to make the Big Dump. When she holds the spoon it is yet another reminder that she is becoming a Big Girl.

She has started to be a little daring with the sounds, putting different vowel sounds together in one 'word' like "ba boo" and "dah dee." I keep hoping that 'ba boo' will turn into 'peek-a-boo' because I think that would be an awesome first word.

The best thing is how freaking mischievous she is. I really didn't know infants had this kind of capability but she is too smart and too devious for her own good. She has a bad habit of wanting to eat cat fur that she will pick off the floor or even directly from the cats. It is disgusting and she knows I don't like it and will try to take it from her, so when she gets her hands on some cat fur, she turns to look at me, smiling, and slooooooowly brings her hand to her mouth. When I get up to go after her, she shrieks and crawls as quickly as she can to the corner behind the couch where she can enjoy her contraband in secret. I freaking love it.

Straw

Jun. 13th, 2008 02:47 pm
judecorp: (blah!)
My kid knows how to use a straw now. I have been trying this for a couple of months and had given up. I mean, if she can't use a straw, no big, you know?

She decided to show me using my iced coffee at lunch. Whoops. She didn't like it, though, so she spit it out. Which is what she does to any beverage that isn't water. Heh.
judecorp: (my sunshine)
It's been a while since I posted some pictures of my big girl. And she really is getting BIG!!

Photos Here: )
judecorp: (baby stripes)
Punk, who is 10 months old today I might add, claps on cue. She actually did it a few days ago but I thought it was a fluke or a coincidence. Because NORMAL babies like to clap when you say, "Yaaaay!" I have been yaying like a maniac for weeks. No go. Because of course that can't be good enough for my Punk. Oh no.

She claps when you say, "Clap your hands." What an overachiever!
judecorp: (baby stripes)
Punk is getting very big all of a sudden. It's like she was a baby for a long time and then something snapped and now she is gearing up to be a toddler. It's freaking me out!

Here there be pictures! )

As for her first day at child care:

She didn't nap. She also didn't eat much (had 6oz of milk instead of 8, had 1/2 a jar of food instead of a whole jar). And she fell somewhere, somehow and got a good bump under her left eye. I am trying not to make a big deal about that, after all, kids fall - especially kids who are suddenly obsessed with pulling up and are not terribly coordinated. She was happy when I left, and happy when I got back, although you could tell that she was so far past overtired that she had lost all control of herself and had zero ability to calm her body down. (I'm guessing this is how she fell.) When I picked her up, she went wild climbing me and tried to bite my shoulder (which is what she does when she is overdone and doesn't know how to calm down).

She crashed out immediately in the car and woke up about 25 minutes later. I got her into the house and she was still so exhausted, yet it took me an HOUR to calm her down and settle her for a nap. Ugh. And then she only took an hour nap. Double ugh. And she was STARVING by dinner time.

Hopefully she will be able to sleep at M's house SOON, because spending an hour with her screaming from exhaustion yet unable to get into sleep was really taxing.
judecorp: (baby stripes)
Punk had her 9 month check-up this morning. We have pretty much 100% ditched the female pediatrician we saw a couple of times in favor of the male pediatrician that we really like. He is so old school (and was the pedi of several people we know - our age) and kind and sweet and mellow about everything. I guess that's what happens when you have seen kids for so long. Either way, he is the one who was super sweet to me when I had all of the nursing issues and never once got down on me for starving my baby. I love him.

It doesn't hurt that he is always telling me how smart Punk is and how great she is. Because, well, I think that, too! He said her fine motor skills were really good and she obviously has good vision considering how she can pick up tiny things. We chatted at length about her muscle tone and it's funny - the PT is always talking about how abnormal things are and how concerning it is, and the pedi is always talking about how he thinks she's just on "the high end of normal" and she will work it out. He said we should make a neurologist appointment for 6 months out and cancel it if we need to. He also said that he echoed my thoughts that she doesn't need an MRI unless she starts showing major delays. He said she is just a strong kid and will stretch herself out as she stands and walks. It's funny, because he is not concerned AT ALL that she can't sit and play with toys but the developmental person in me is freaking about that.

He also wasn't bothered that her fontanel is nearly closed already. He said that some strong, active babies seem to develop faster like that. When he makes weird statements like that he reminds me of my dad, who was always making stuff up when he didn't know the answer. :) But he sounds so believable! Either way, her head is growing along her curve so I guess it's not a big deal.

I told him we had dropped down to reflux meds once a day but she started urping and stuff again and were thinking of going back to twice. He said it was up to us but he thought the increase in refluxy stuff was probably from increased saliva from teething. He hoped we would be able to stop the meds soon. (ME TOO.) He also said to try her on yogurt and see how that goes, and if it goes well, to try cheese. I haven't done any dairy stuff since she had such a problem with dairy formula when she was little. So I will give it a try.

What's awesome is that when he was walking out, I told her, "Say bye-bye," which she normally NEVER does... and she waved! Which reinforces that he thinks she's a genius, of course.

Also, she is still freakishly tall. 85th percentile for weight at 21 pounds even, and 95th percentile for height at 29.75".

Height and Weight Charts )
judecorp: (crucified baby)
Tooth #3 has broken the surface. You can't really see it but you can feel the hard little nub. Woah. Tooth #3.

Also, it took nearly 45 minutes to make the afternoon nap happen, even though she was completely and totally exhausted. I had to actually hold her so that she couldn't move so that she would struggle until she gave up and fell asleep. That never happens.

I'm sure the two are related, but right now I'm too frazzled to care. I hope this isn't a preview of the night to come.

High kneel

Feb. 29th, 2008 08:38 am
judecorp: (ow)
Punk has discovered the world of the "high kneel." She crawls over to something and then reaches up higher and plays on her knees, or grabs things. I love the high kneel. It's cute, and it's a step toward the "pulling up." Besides, being up in a kneel bends her legs. Yay.

So anyway, with the high kneel comes the potential for the falling over. And I really do leave Punk a lot of space to do her thing and fall over, because she needs to figure things out.

Day One of the high kneel and she has a big scratch on the side of her head. And it's not even 9am.

Whoopsie!
judecorp: (let's stay inside)
Hey Bostonians - Does anyone want to put me up next Saturday night? I am hoping to go to a Black 47 concert with my college roommate like old times but really am too old to drive back home after. And umm, a night of unbroken sleep? Come on! I'm housebroken and really want to take advantage of Jen's offer!

~//~

Since there is no denying that we have a totally mobile child (she has been army crawling for a good three weeks now but is full on four-on-the-floor with speed now), it was time to rearrange some things. I moved the TV stand into the corner so I could hide all of the wires and taped them all to the back of the stand, and pulled some of the breakable stuff off the lower shelf of the coffee table. Jen took the baby to the mall so I could spray-clean the life out of the TV and all of the electronics (man, they were gross) and came back with some of those square foam floor mats so we could put them down on the living room floor. The blankets I've had down there for a long time kept getting full of cat fur and I was tired of it. This is much better. Besides, the blankets never really padded the wood floor enough.

~//~

Punk has a runny nose and has been out of sorts on and off today. Poor little peanut. She went to bed at 6:30 and woke up crying at 7, absolutely refusing to go back into the crib. I was able to get her back to sleep on the futon and walk away easily, but I think she's just too sad and off-kilter that just the idea of the crib was too much.

~//~

I think we're going to try moving our bed against the wall so she can sleep there and we can take the futon out of her room. That way I can babyproof her room really well and she can play in there, too. Our house is too small to keep her only in the living room.

~//~

I am seriously sick of winter. We got MORE snow yesterday - probably about 10 inches. I feel like we'll never be able to play outside again. It's that time of year when you really start to feel like spring will never come. Punk and I are so tired of being cooped up in the house. But I did manage to make a banana bread today and even put some ground flax seed in it. Yum!
judecorp: (motherhood)
Punk had a banner day today.

We were looking for something cheap to do that wasn't the mall (dear God I hate the mall, please smite the mall) and after looking at the admission price for the butterfly exhibit thing ($12/person, ouch), we decided to go to the big Yankee Candle flagship store. What we didn't know is that they were having some sort of Winter Extravaganza event and it was PACKED. Like "stalk someone to their parking spot" packed.

We got to YC a lot later than we intended and I figured we would have an hour there, tops, before Punk had an exhausted meltdown. We went to the restaurant that is there (Chandler's) - whoops, there goes "cheap" - and for the first time ever, Punk sat in the restaurant high chair for the entire meal! I got to eat with TWO HANDS! She was amused with toys and oyster crackers which ended up on the floor and I realized, yep, we're "those people." Oh well. Then we went into the store.

She rode in the stroller a lot longer than I expected her to and was really enthralled by all of the stuff there. We sniffed a million candles and looked at all the other stuff (that place is crazy!) and when she got fussy in the stroller, I put her in the mei tai and she was good for a while more. I think two hours went by before I realized we should really feed here ASAP as she was likely to crash out hard in the car. She sucked down her bottle in one of the gift shops, went to the bathroom with Jen for a diaper change, and did indeed fall asleep in the car. And then took a good 1.5 hour nap (or longer) when we got home!

It's amazing how much older she seems to have gotten almost overnight. It really kind of chokes me up when I think about it. She now can sit by herself pretty well - I can't really leave the room while she's sitting but I don't have to hover over her, either - and was so comfortable in that high chair at the restaurant (which has no support). I spent most of yesterday calling people and leaving the message, "My kid has two teeth and is army crawling all over the house!" and already today I have had two heart attacks when she scooted her way over to outlets and plugs. Time to rearrange things!

She will be dashing around the house on her hands and knees in no time. She can go one or two "steps" that way but then will belly flop and do the rest with her arms. She is amazing. She seems to love to develop new skills in big spurts, which is cute in some ways and an emotional kick in the pants in others.

I need to upload pictures. I have a bunch from as far back as Super Tuesday.
judecorp: (math)
We are preemptively spending our tax return. That is never a good idea, I'm sure, but Jen's parents keep asking when we're going to visit them (read: take the baby to their house) and I stumbled across tickets from Hartford to Ft. Myers that were a) not ridiculously expensive and b) NONSTOP, baby! so we bought them. We had to impulse buy them because the outgoing flight had five remaining seats. So we bought them and then called Jen's parents to make sure they would be home.

I guess Jen's mom is tired of arguing with Jen about our "crazy" parenting choices, because when she asked if we needed a crib for the baby and Jen said, "No, she sleeps with us," her mom said, "Oh, whatever."

HA HA HA.

~//~

Punk attended her first party yesterday! She was in a room full of strangers on a too-short nap and she DID. NOT. CRY. Hot damn, she even sat in her travel booster seat thinger and ate peas, laughed at some strangers, and let people she did not know pick her up. She did scream, but hey, that's what she does best. And. And. AND. she let me put her down in her PnP and slept without a peep for nearly 4 hours before I put her on the bed with me. And she even took a nap this morning. A nap! At SOMEONE ELSE'S HOUSE outside of the Fortress of Solitude. I had to lay in bed with her but whatever, she took a nap!

~//~

She made up for all of this awesome by crying a lot when we took her to see my grandparents. Thank God we could blame it on teething, because I don't want them to get a complex.

~//~

Speaking of teething, guess whose second tooth broke through the other day? Go on, guess.

~//~

On our way to the party thinger in Boston (we brought a car seat and some other stuff to [livejournal.com profile] whuffle and [livejournal.com profile] halleyscomet) we had to stop to feed a hungry Punk and the nearest place to stop was the Natick Mall. While we were walking through Initials One Cent to find a place to sit, Punk channeled her voice through me and said, "I wonder if they have a Gymboree," because they don't have such craziness where we live, thank God. And right outside the store was a frickin Gymboree. So we bought her an outfit. On sale. That cost $40.

THAT OUTFIT HAD BETTER BE MADE OF GOLD, DAMMIT.

~//~

Also, we got to smoosh on [livejournal.com profile] hopemcg and [livejournal.com profile] meglett and Quinn! It was so fun and only a little crazy to have an infant and a toddler in the house. I guess we're all prepared for the inevitable #2 now!

My kid is currently on her hands and knees rocking back and forth. Every so often she gets enough momentum to scoot forward. God help me.

She also has the ridge of a first tooth out as of this morning.

And has taken a 20 minute nap so far today.

I wonder if my kid will ever learn to sit up on her own. She's almost seven months old. Sheesh!

Punk had her 6 month WBV today, even though she'll be 7 months in a week and a half or so. Oops. We got a little behind.

Punk had her first taste of brown rice cereal yesterday! She is getting so big so fast, I can't even stand it. We just got back from South Carolina on Tuesday night into Wednesday, and already she has done new things! She had some solid food and also started saying, "da da da." Every time she does, I say, "No dada. Mama." Heh.

I think she liked it!
